Spring is Finally Here!

Well okay so I am loving the warmer weather, however it is supposed to get cold again this weekend. Not looking forward to that, but it will be better than the colder temps we were having a month ago, when they were calling for snow every week! I'm just excited because I am really looking forward to planting some tomatoes. I love fresh tomatoes, they are nothing like the store bought kind. I tried growing some a few years ago when I was living at home with my parents and the squirrels there would pick them and eat them right in front of me. One time one of the squirrels picked one then went underneath the front of my car and ate the tomato while looking right at me. The squirrel was holding it with both of his tiny little hands and took bite after bite, spitting the peeling out. That squirrel had some nerve. I just stood there gaping at this animal. I really wished I had had my video camera handy, because I would have loved to videoed that little incident. The squirrels would pick them while they were still small and green. Needless to say I was not very successful at growing tomatoes that year. I have grown them back in the past and I had great success back then. I sure hope I can get some good ones to grow this year. I tried last year with those topsy turvey planters, what a joke. That didn't work. I think it does work well with the cherry tomatoes but not the bigger tomatoes. I want the big beefsteak tomatoes. I hope to start my little garden in a couple of weeks.

  1. Good luck with your adventures with the squirrels. I had the same problem however I ended up using chicken wire around the plants. It resolved the problem for me.

  2. Nancy, I remember the topsy turvey quite well. I even have the picture of the one tomato hanging from that long stem. Squirrels are cute--but a nuisance as well. I wish I could feed the birds, but the squirrels always come and eat the good stuff and it is just too expensive to feed them too. I wish you could have videod that squirrel and submitted it to America's Funniest Home Videos.

  3. Year before last I had a number of cherry tomato plants. The squirrels were a problem sometimes. I had several very nice tomatoes that had a big bite gnawed out of the side. I haven't figured out how to keep them entirely out of the garden. Good luck to you on that. :)

  4. So glad that you mentioned that the topsy turvy planters didn't work. My husband has been itching to buy some. I'll save my money to buy good old fashioned stakes instead.

  5. My husband swears that the squirrels in our yard purposefully thrown pine cones in our pool. He has a personal vendetta against all squirrels. He shoots them every chance he gets!

  6. I was wondering about those topsy turvey things. I don't personally like tomatos but my mom was looking into getting some of those because she hates gardening. I will have to let her know. I have been thinking about starting a garden but I think I am going to wait until next summer when I am finished with school so I can dedicate the time to actually make things grow.
